Renewables - Grid Connection Application (G98/G99)

Application in. Approval tracked. Commission on schedule.

Step by step
1
Determine G98 or G99Jobs

Confirm at project award whether the system requires G98 (connect and notify) or G99 (full application). Systems above 16A per phase require G99. Record the determination in the job record.

2
Pre-application enquiry to DNOJobs

Submit a pre-application enquiry to the relevant DNO to confirm local network capacity, identify any known constraints, and obtain an indicative timeline and feasibility confirmation.

3
Compile and submit G99 applicationeForms

Prepare single-line diagram, inverter datasheets, panel specs, earthing arrangement, protection relay settings, and G99 Type Test certificates. Submit via the DNO's online portal and log the reference number.

4
Monitor technical reviewProject Tracking

Track the application through the DNO's 4-8 week technical review. Chase progress at the mid-point if no update received. Log all DNO correspondence in the job record.

5
Review connection offerJobs

When the DNO issues a connection offer, review the export limit, connection charges, and technical conditions. Discuss export limit implications with the customer before accepting.

6
Accept offer and schedule commissioningInvoices

Accept the connection offer, pay DNO connection charges, and schedule commissioning. Book DNO witness testing for systems above 50kWp.

7
Commission and submit final documentationeForms App

Complete installation and commissioning. Submit final documentation to the DNO and update the job record to confirm the system is live and grid-connected.

What this workflow solves

We submitted the G99 application two weeks before the planned commissioning date and ended up delaying the customer by nearly three months while the DNO completed its technical review.

The DNO came back with an export limit 60% below our system's capacity - the customer had already signed off on a commercial model that assumed full export, and we had to renegotiate the project scope.

The inverters we specified weren't on the DNO's approved G99 type test list. We found out at commissioning and had to source replacement units at short notice and at our own cost.
