Pick List
A document - physical or digital - that instructs warehouse or fulfillment staff on which items to retrieve from stock, in what quantities and from which locations, to pack and dispatch a specific customer order.
A pick list - sometimes called a picking list - is a structured document that tells the person preparing an order exactly what to retrieve from stock, in what quantity, and from which location. Generated from a confirmed customer order, it bridges the gap between a completed sale and the physical act of packing and dispatching goods.
The term is most commonly used in warehousing, distribution, and any business that holds physical stock. For promotional merchandise distributors handling blank goods or pre-decorated items, a pick list initiates the fulfillment process. For AV hire businesses, it serves a similar function when preparing a kit manifest ahead of an event.
What a Pick List Contains
A well-structured pick list includes the customer name and order reference, the SKU or product code for each item, a plain-language product description, the quantity required, and the storage location - by aisle, shelf, or bin number. Where multiple items come from different warehouse zones, the list may be sorted by location to minimize travel time.
Errors at the Picking Stage
Picking errors - retrieving the wrong item, wrong variant, or wrong quantity - create costly downstream problems. Incorrect deliveries lead to customer complaints, return shipping costs, and reprint or replacement orders. In higher-volume operations, digital pick lists generated from an order management system reduce manual transcription risk and allow real-time updates when an item is out of stock mid-pick.
One shipment, one pick list
If a customer order is being fulfilled in multiple batches or from different suppliers, generate a separate pick list for each dispatch. Combining items from different shipment lines on a single list is a common cause of packing errors and short deliveries.
