Risk Register

A risk register is a structured document used on projects to record identified risks, rate their likelihood and potential impact, and track the actions in place to prevent or reduce them. It is updated throughout the project lifecycle.

A risk register is a living project management document that systematically captures potential problems before they occur. Rather than responding to issues as they emerge, project teams use a risk register to identify what could go wrong, assess how likely it is and what the consequences would be, and agree in advance what actions will be taken to prevent or reduce the impact.

Each entry typically records: the risk description, a probability rating (commonly scored 1-5), the potential impact on cost, schedule, or quality (also scored 1-5), the resulting risk score (probability multiplied by impact), the owner responsible for managing it, and the mitigation or contingency action in place. High-scoring risks get reviewed more frequently and may require contingency sums or programme float to absorb them if they occur.

Who Uses a Risk Register and When

Risk registers are most closely associated with construction projects but are used across any project-based business where cost and schedule uncertainty are significant. AV systems integrators preparing for a complex installation, solar businesses managing grid connection applications, and office furniture dealers coordinating phased office fit-outs all face project risks that benefit from structured tracking.

A risk register is typically created during the pre-contract or mobilization phase and updated at regular project review intervals. On larger construction projects under NEC or JCT contract forms, a formal risk register may be a contractual requirement. For smaller jobs, even a simple shared document covering the five or six most likely risk events gives the project manager something concrete to manage against, rather than relying on memory and informal awareness.

Zigaflow's Project Tracking module provides real-time visibility into job status and milestones, giving businesses the operational foundation to spot and respond to developing risks before they affect delivery timelines or margin.
