A domestic EV charging installation takes half a day on site but has a compliance chain that catches many electricians out. This guide covers the OZEV grant process from April 2026, BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 requirements, and how to run a clean survey-to-invoice process across every job.

Domestic EV charger installation looks simple compared with a commercial solar project or a heat pump survey, but it has its own compliance chain - and the part that catches most electricians out is not the wiring. It is the OZEV grant administration. A 7kW install takes half a day on site, but quote it wrong, miss the grant window, or skip a step in the certification sequence, and you delay payment, upset a customer, or forfeit a claim worth £500. This guide walks through every stage of a domestic EV charging job from first contact to final invoice, with the compliance steps in the order they actually have to happen.

What You Need in Place Before You Can Quote

Domestic EV charging is Part P notifiable work with additional compliance requirements specific to EV installations. Before you quote and win any jobs, four things have to be in order.

NICEIC, NAPIT, ECA, or Stroma registration for domestic notifiable electrical work. This covers your Part P obligation and gives you the route to self-certify the installation without a building control submission.

18th Edition qualification (BS 7671:2018+A4:2026). The A4 amendment, which came into effect in 2026, reinforced the requirements under Section 722, including updated PEN fault protection guidance. Your qualification needs to reflect the current edition.

OZEV authorised installer status. This is mandatory if you want to process grant claims on your customers' behalf. Without it, eligible customers cannot access the grant through you, and you will lose jobs to OZEV-approved competitors. Registration is done through the OZEV portal.

A charger portfolio on OZEV's approved list. Every charger you install for grant-eligible customers must be an OZEV-approved smart charger compliant with the Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021. The approved list is maintained on gov.uk. Sourcing a charger outside this list means no grant, even if the customer is otherwise eligible.

Level 3 EV Qualification

From October 2026, each person physically installing a charge point is expected to hold their own Level 3 EV qualification, not just the firm. If you run a small team, factor qualification time into your hiring and training plans now.

Survey First, Price Later: What a Domestic Site Visit Covers

Every domestic EV charging quote should start from a site visit. A quote issued without seeing the property will either be padded with contingency to protect your margin or revised upward after you see the job - neither of which serves the customer relationship.

A domestic survey covers six things.

Consumer unit condition: check the board age, whether it meets current standards, how many spare ways are available, and the RCD type. An older split-load board without a spare way needs a supplementary enclosure or a full replacement. Price this before quoting.

Cable route and distance: measure the route from the consumer unit to the proposed charger location. A tidy 3-metre indoor run is straightforward. A 20-metre route that crosses a driveway, passes through walls, or requires conduit in a garage is a different job.

Earthing arrangement: most UK homes use a TN-C-S (PME) earthing arrangement, which requires PEN fault protection on any EV charging circuit. There are three compliant solutions - a TT earth rod, a PEN fault detection device, or a charger with integrated PEN fault protection. Identify which applies before the quote goes out.

Supply capacity: confirm the property's incoming fuse rating. Most houses handle a 7kW charger without issue, but where the supply is tight, a load management device may be needed to prevent the charger and other loads from tripping the main fuse simultaneously.

Charger location and fixing surface: note the wall material, exposure, and whether the customer has a preference for tethered or untethered. Factor cabling containment and weatherproofing into your materials list.

Grant eligibility check: confirm whether the customer is a homeowner with their own driveway (not eligible for the OZEV EV Chargepoint Grant since April 2022), a renter or flat owner (eligible from April 2026 for up to £500), or a residential landlord (eligible for up to 200 sockets per year). Document eligibility at survey stage so it informs the quote.

Building the Quote: Items to Include and the Grant Deduction

Domestic EV quotes should be itemised. Customers compare prices and an itemised quote lets you show the scope clearly, which makes the grant deduction transparent and reduces disputes.

A well-structured quote covers:

  • Charger unit (brand, model, tethered or untethered, kW rating)
  • Dedicated circuit materials (cable, RCBO or RCD, PEN fault protection device if required, consumer unit work)
  • Labour (installation, testing, certification)
  • Any additional works identified at survey (consumer unit replacement, groundworks, extra cable containment)
  • OZEV grant deduction (if applicable) - shown as a line item reducing the customer's net payment

For reference, published market data for 2026 shows that a standard 7kW smart charger unit ranges from approximately £400 to £800 depending on brand and features. Installation labour and materials for a straightforward domestic job add approximately £350 to £700. Most completed domestic installations land in the £800 to £1,500 range before any grant deduction. After a full £500 OZEV grant, an eligible customer on a typical job pays £300 to £1,000. Your actual costs will depend on your purchase prices, overhead, and property-specific conditions.

From April 2026, a dated quote is required as part of the OZEV grant application process. This means you cannot apply for grant approval retrospectively: issue the quote first, apply for the grant, receive approval, then schedule the installation. Build this into your customer communication from the outset so they understand why the sequence matters.

Grant Application Timing

The OZEV EV Chargepoint Grant is applied for through the government's Find a Grant platform. You apply on the customer's behalf after issuing a dated quote. Once approved, the installation must be completed and the claim submitted within 90 days. Track this window per job - letting it lapse means the customer loses the grant and you face an awkward conversation about the total price.

Managing the Grant Window Between Quote and Installation

The 90-day window between grant approval and claim submission is a project management task, not just a paperwork task. You need to know, per job, when the clock started and when it expires.

Keep a record for every grant-eligible job: customer name, grant approval date, 90-day deadline, and scheduled installation date. A simple job log works at low volume but creates risk once you are running more than a handful of OZEV jobs simultaneously. The issue is not the paperwork itself - it is not knowing which approvals are approaching expiry while you are focused on site work. A system that surfaces approaching deadlines automatically is worth the setup time once your EV volume reaches double figures per month.

The claim submission after installation requires charger details, an invoice, and installation photographs. Prepare these on the day, not a week later when the photo is gone and the invoice has not been raised. A clean post-install pack - photographs, EIC draft, invoice - speeds both the OZEV claim and the customer payment.

Unapproved Chargers

Installing a charger that is not on the OZEV approved list for a grant-eligible customer means the grant will be refused after the work is done. Check the approved list at the time of quoting, not at the time of ordering - chargers are added and occasionally removed.

Running the Installation

A standard domestic 7kW installation runs in a logical sequence. Deviating from it - particularly on DNO notification - creates compliance problems.

  1. Confirm grant approval (where applicable) before starting work. If the customer is grant-eligible, you need the approval reference before the installation begins. Work started before approval cannot be claimed retrospectively.
  2. Complete any consumer unit work first. If the survey flagged a replacement, supplementary enclosure, or additional RCBO, this goes in before the EV circuit is added. The board needs to be compliant before the dedicated circuit lands on it.
  3. Run the dedicated circuit. A dedicated final circuit from the consumer unit to the charger location - no spurs, no shared circuits. Cable sizing must account for EV charging as a continuous load (100% load factor). Any external cable run requires armoured cable and appropriate containment.
  4. Install PEN fault protection if using an external device. If the property does not use TT earthing and the charger does not have built-in PEN fault detection, fit the PEN fault protection device at this stage.
  5. Mount and terminate the charger. Torque terminations to manufacturer specification. Commission the charger and test smart functionality and the default off-peak scheduling window.
  6. Test and certify. Measure insulation resistance, Zs loop impedance, and RCD trip times. Produce the Electrical Installation Certificate from actual test results. This step cannot be done off-site or deferred.
  7. Submit DNO notification. For a standard 7kW single-phase domestic install, DNO notification is a post-install obligation - the work can proceed without advance approval, but notification must go in after completion. Higher-rated or three-phase installations require advance DNO approval before work starts.
  8. Register with your Competent Person Scheme. Self-certify the installation through NICEIC, NAPIT, or your scheme of choice. This completes your Part P obligation.

Certification, Handover, and Invoicing

The handover is the step that most electricians rush. Done properly, it protects you as much as it serves the customer.

Walk the customer through the charger operation: how to use the app, how to set or override the off-peak schedule, and what the default charging window means for their overnight routine. Register the charger with the manufacturer on the customer's behalf so the warranty is in their name from day one.

Issue the Electrical Installation Certificate in writing. The customer needs this for their mortgage lender, insurer, or any future property sale. Keep your own copy.

Submit the OZEV grant claim immediately after the installation is complete. The claim requires the charger details, invoice, and installation photographs. Delaying this beyond the 90-day window forfeits the grant.

Raise your invoice promptly. The customer invoice shows the gross installation cost and the OZEV grant deduction as a clear line item. They pay the net figure. The grant is recovered from OZEV directly - but you carry the short-term cash position until OZEV reimburses you. If you are running significant OZEV volume, this cash flow gap between invoicing at the net amount and receiving reimbursement is worth monitoring alongside your accounts receivable.

Photograph Everything

Take photographs of the completed installation - the charger, cable route, consumer unit connections, external cable run, and PEN fault protection arrangement. These serve the OZEV claim, your own records, any warranty discussion, and any future EICR on the property. Photographs taken on the day take a minute; attempting to reconstruct the evidence six months later does not.

Common Margin Leaks on Domestic EV Jobs

Domestic EV charging is high-volume, relatively short-duration work. The margin risk is not one large decision but a set of operational habits that quietly erode profit across dozens of jobs.

Under-pricing cable route complexity at quote stage. A job where the cable needs to cross a driveway, run through a brick wall, and travel 15 metres is materially more work than a 3-metre internal run. Survey it, price it, and itemise it on the quote. Consumer unit upgrades discovered on arrival, not at survey. An older board that needs replacing adds cost and time. If you did not survey, this becomes an awkward conversation at 9am on installation day. Survey first.

Grant applications submitted too late. Missing the 90-day window means the customer loses £500 and you have to explain why. Tracking approval dates across multiple jobs is a process task, not a detail to hold in your head.

Not recovering OZEV reimbursements promptly. You invoice the customer at the net amount and carry the full cost until OZEV reimburses you. Submit claims the same week as the installation, not when the admin pile gets too high.

Skipping the post-install photograph pack. OZEV requires photographs as part of the claim. Missing or unclear images can slow or reject a claim. Treat the photograph pack as a mandatory step in your installation checklist, not an afterthought.

Domestic EV charging is a growing segment, and the installers who scale it profitably are not doing anything unusual. They are running a clean quote-to-claim process consistently, job after job. Survey before pricing, track the grant window, certify cleanly, invoice promptly, and claim the same week. That is the whole discipline.
