MCS accreditation: what it covers and how installers get it

MCS accreditation is the UK quality certification that allows a renewable energy installer to register completed installations on the national MCS database, enabling their customers to claim the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant and Smart Export Guarantee payments.

MCS accreditation is the UK quality mark for small-scale renewable technology installers - covering solar PV, heat pumps, battery storage, solar thermal and biomass. Any installer whose customers want to claim the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant or register for Smart Export Guarantee payments needs it: both schemes require the job to be carried out by a certified installer. Being on the MCS public register lets an installer generate the certificate that triggers a customer's grant claim or export tariff - something an uncertified competitor simply cannot do. In the renewables sector, MCS accreditation is the practical gateway to funded work.

The three pillars: installer standards, product directory and the public register

MCS accreditation rests on three connected elements that each play a distinct role. The first is the installer standards: a library of MCS Installation Standards (MIS documents) that define exactly how each technology must be designed, installed and commissioned. MIS 3002 governs solar PV and MIS 3005 covers heat pump systems - each revised in 2025 to split design and installation into separate documents. The second is the approved product directory: only MCS-certified equipment can be used in a registered installation, so both the installer and the product must carry certification for a job to count. The third is the public MCS Installer Register, where certified businesses are listed by technology and postcode. Customers, lenders and grant administrators check this register - it is the public record of who has earned the mark and for which technologies.

How installers get MCS accreditation

Installers do not apply to MCS directly. Certification runs through a UKAS-accredited certification body - organisations such as NAPIT, NICEIC or HETAS that are approved to assess businesses against the MCS standards. The process requires the installer to demonstrate relevant technical qualifications, hold membership of an MCS-recognised consumer code such as RECC or HIES, put documented quality management systems in place, and pass an on-site assessment of a real completed installation. Initial certification typically costs between £1,000 and £2,500 depending on the certification body and the number of technologies covered, with annual surveillance audits adding £500 to £1,500 per year.

Certification is granted per technology, so a business certified for solar PV is not automatically approved for heat pumps. Once certified, every completed installation must be registered on the MCS Installation Database, and each registration carries a per-job fee of around £10 to £30. That registration generates the MCS certificate the installer issues to the customer - the document that actually unlocks the grant claim or export tariff.

Keeping documentation in order across every job is where operational discipline matters most. Document templates help installers produce consistent handover packs and commissioning sheets, while job management tools link each installation record to its certificate and customer details so nothing is left outstanding at handover.

2026 scheme changes

MCS is rolling out a redeveloped installer scheme throughout 2026. Every customer must now be covered by an MCS-approved financial protection product, and a new Customer Commitment document is required on each job. Assessment frequency becomes risk-based, with fewer visits for consistently compliant businesses. Existing certification carries across as certification bodies transition to the new scheme during the year.
