Turnaround Time

The total elapsed time from receiving a customer request or order to delivering the completed output. Includes internal processing time, supplier lead time, and transit - not just production time.

Turnaround time is the total elapsed time from receiving a customer request or order to delivering the completed output - whether that's a finished product, a completed installation, or a sent quote. Customers experience it directly even when they can't see anything else about how you operate.

In promotional merchandise, turnaround time runs from order confirmation to goods received at the customer's location. Industry data shows that 68.8% of buyers prioritize faster turnaround as a top-three buying criterion (PPAI Oct 2025). In construction and trade services, turnaround time applies at every stage: time to quote, time to mobilize, time to invoice after completion. Slippage in any of these affects customer satisfaction and cash flow.

What Affects Turnaround Time

Turnaround time is made up of distinct phases, each of which can be measured and managed separately. For a promotional merchandise distributor, those phases are: time from inquiry to quote sent, time from order confirmation to supplier PO raised, supplier production lead time, transit time to customer. Knowing which phase is slowest tells you where improvement effort is worth spending.

Internal delays account for more of the total turnaround time than most businesses expect. Waiting for artwork approval, chasing internal sign-offs, or building supplier POs days after order confirmation all extend turnaround before production has even started. These are controllable; supplier lead time often isn't.

Turnaround Time vs Lead Time

Lead time is the supplier's production and delivery window - from purchase order placed to goods received. Turnaround time is the broader measure from the customer's perspective: everything from initial request to final delivery, including all internal steps that sit around the lead time.

Quote turnaround matters

time from inquiry received to quote sent is one of the simplest and most impactful turnaround metrics to measure. Businesses that respond within an hour are significantly more likely to win the order than those responding the next day.
